Roza Tuletaeva reports being suspended by her hair, suffocated with a plastic bag and sexually humiliated in a police station in Zhanaozen. She was charged for “inciting social discord” because, as a labour activist, she was one of the main contact points for media and international organizations during the oil workers’ strike in 2011. Roza Tuletaeva is still waiting for an effective investigation into her torture and other ill-treatment by officials.

Sign this petition to call on the President of Kazakhstan to restore justice for Roza and all victims of torture and their families.

The petition will be delivered on the 21st of March in time for the spring holiday in Kazakhstan, Nauryz, celebrating new beginnings.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev

Dear President,

We, the undersigned, are concerned with the failure of the authorities of Kazakhstan to hold the law enforcement forces accountable and to carry out an independent investigation into the use of torture and other ill-treatment. Reform is long overdue and real changes should be introduced as a matter of urgency.

We call on you, ahead of the Nauryz Holiday, to breathe life into Kazakhstan’s commitments to uphold human rights and to:

  • Ensure prompt, impartial and comprehensive investigations of all complaints regarding torture and other ill-treatment and bring the perpetrators to justice
  • Ensure a judicial review of the convictions of those individuals who claim to have been forced to confess under duress and ending impunity for the perpetrators
  • Ensure that an effective National Preventive Mechanism is established in full compliance with the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.
